Diabetes Management via Internet and Telephone-Based Programs
Chul Sik Kim
Abstract
Good glycemic control is required for the subsequent prevention of diabetic complications. However, achieving and maintaining tight glycemic targets represent a major challenge. In recent years, Internet and telephone delivery of self-management programs have emerged as popular approaches to the management of diabetes. Self-management is particularly important for patients with diabetes, given the complexity of the disease and numerous co-morbid conditions associated with it. In order to successfully management their disease, diabetes patients must not only take medications and maintain a healthy lifestyle but also monitor a number of variables (i.e., blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, weight, food intake, and physical activity) in order to reduce risk factors. As a result, Internet and telephone-based interventions focused on diabetes self-management are more complex than others, and most have, in addition to an educational components, built-in self-regulatory activities such as tools for uploading and monitoring blood glucose levels or means for calculating food intake or body mass index, strategies for enhancing adherence to the diabetes regimen, and massage framing to tailor treatment to the specific needs of patients with diabetes. Recently we designed an Internet-based blood glucose monitoring system with tailored medical advice and brief reminder sent through messaging system. (Korean Clinical Diabetes J 11:25-29, 2010)
