Historical Change in Diagnostic Methods of Diabetes Mellitus
Min Young Chung
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The diagnosis of diabetes mellitus has been based on the hyperglycemic symptoms, fasting plasma glucose level, and the 2-hour post-challenge plasma glucose level. Glycosylated hemoglobin A (hemoglobin A1C) has been used as a marker for chronic hyperglycemia, and recently, the American Diabetes Association included hemoglobin A1C test in diagnostic criteria of diabetes mellitus.
